What:

With November comes World Usability Day and in recognition of this year’s theme of “Engagement”, we will be hosting a panel discussion on engagement in gaming. Gaming has become ubiquitous in our society, where we have witnessed the gamification of everything from mental and physical health, to education, to brand marketing, and improving retail customer loyalty. With all that gaming going on, it’s no wonder that the industry is claiming approximately 1.2 billion people in the world are actively engaging in some form of gaming with global game revenues expected to hit $75.2 billion this year, and growing to $86.1 billion by 2016 (according to newzoo.com).

Please join us at The Fox & Feather Pub & Grill where you can engage with our panel of gaming industry professionals who will be discussing various aspects of user engagement in gaming. The discussion will range from user experience, to marketing, and beyond. Here is a rundown of our panel:

  • Shamima Khan, M.A. (Human-Computer Interaction), B.Sc. (Computer Science), is the Studio Director at Radiant Design Studio where she is responsible for business development, project management and delivery of interactive eLearning applications and games. Shamima brings more than 15 years’ experience in user-centered design, customer research, software development and validation.  She has spearheaded the design and implementation of over 25 web applications and game based eLearning apps with a focus on compelling user experience. Ms. Khan has researched and designed a wide variety of complex systems including instructor-student interactions in online learning environments, usability issues for digital television systems, push-to-talk applications, digital game authoring technology, and mobile technologies for clients such as AMITA, Hivva Technologies, and Nortel Networks. Prior to founding Radiant Design Studio, Shamima worked for CSA, DISTIL Interactive and Entrust.Shamima is joining this event because she’s passionate about UX and education, and believes gamification is not just a buzz word.
  • Ben Kane has been an independent game developer for the past four years, with his most recent project taking him into the world of virtual reality gaming. The game, “Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes”, is a co-operative party game where players must work together to defuse a bomb in virtual reality with the help of players in the real world. Ben co-founded a new company, Steel Crate Games, and is part of a team that is working to create what they hope will be the definitive VR party game.Virtual reality is a quickly evolving technology and with it comes a lot of experimentation and learning. Long held assumptions of game development are suddenly no longer valid and game developers are racing to find new solutions. Ben plans to clear the air on the current state of VR game development, including its outstanding challenges as this technology prepares to hit mainstream audiences.
  • Carla De Ciccio holds the position of Communications and Marketing Coordinator at Hibernum where she develops marketing and communication strategies for the studio’s operations and product launches. Before Hibernum, Carla co-founded the Ottawa International Game Conference where she held the role of Chief Operating Officer and developed strategic alliances with some of the largest companies in the video game including Microsoft, Amazon, Ubisoft, Capcom, Square Enix, Playscreen, Warner Brothers and Unity, to only name a few. Prior to that, Carla acted as a community manager and a communications advisor for many start-ups in the tech and digital media industries where she became a specialist in crowdfunding after carrying out multiple successful campaigns on the Kickstarter and Indiegogo platforms.Carla holds a Bachelor’s degree in communications and business administration from the University of Ottawa and brings a unique blend of creativity and result driven strategies to the studio.
  • Finally, our moderator for the panel discussion, Kyle McInnes, is the co-founder of Smoke Labs, a mobile game and app studio with clients as large as Mattel. As a moderator, he’ll bring his experience from a game studio perspective, but also from 5 years as a blogger that covered the game industry and founded a mobile game blog called QuicklyBored.com.

Workshop Description

From first concept to polished pixel, learn to create mobile apps and websites that delight. The workshop explores the practical principles of mobile and touchscreen design, teaching you to “think mobile” by planning and creating app interfaces in tune with the psychology and ergonomics of an audience on the go. Through a day of hands-on exercises, you’ll learn to conceive and refine an app’s interface and user experience in tune with the needs of a mobile audience… and their fingers and thumbs.

Who it’s for: This workshop isn’t (only) for geeks. The workshop’s interdisciplinary approach is appropriate for everyone involved in the mobile design process: designers, programmers, managers, marketers, clients. The workshop takes a hands-on approach to intermediate and advanced design concepts but requires no specific technical know-how. Experienced designers and newcomers alike will uncover the shifts in mindset and technique required to craft a great mobile app.

What you’ll learn: The workshop will equip you to ask the right questions (and find the right answers) to make aesthetic, technical, and usability decisions that will make your apps a pleasure to use. You’ll learn:

  • The expectations of a mobile audience
  • The ergonomic demands of designing for touch
  • How to cope with the reduced real estate left in the wake of giant touch targets
  • Unique considerations for designing for tablets
  • Emerging gesture conventions and design patterns for both apps and web
  • How to make gestures discoverable by educating users with contextual cues
  • Designing for sensors, the superpowers of mobile devices

About Josh Clark

Josh Clark is a designer specializing in mobile design, strategy, and user experience. He’s author of “Tapworthy: Designing Great iPhone Apps” (O’Reilly, 2010) and “Best iPhone Apps” (O’Reilly, 2009). Josh’s agency Global Moxie offers design services, strategic consulting, and training to help creative organizations build tapworthy mobile apps and responsive websites. His clients include AOL, Time Inc, eBay, and many others.

Before the internet swallowed him up, Josh was a management consultant at Monitor Group in Cambridge, Mass, and before that, a producer of national PBS programs at Boston’s WGBH. He shared his three words of Russian with Mikhail Gorbachev, strolled the ranch with Nancy Reagan, hobnobbed with Rockefellers, and wrote trivia questions for a primetime game show. In 1996, he created the uberpopular “Couch-to-5K” (C25K) running program, which has helped millions of skeptical would-be exercisers take up jogging. (His motto is the same for fitness as it is for software user experience: no pain, no pain.)

CapCHI is proud to present two presentations on Tuesday November 6th, in celebration of World Usability Day 2012 on Thursday November 8th.

1. “Mixed-media Computer Human Interfaces“, presented by Tim Moore, PhD CHFP, Ergosum Ltd.

If you have a Postgraduate degree in User Interface design but still have problems with TV remote controls, with ATM machines or with Point-of-Sale credit card devices this is the presentation for you.

Most computer interfaces are heavily screen based and there are fewer hardware considerations as touch and voice commands gradually replace aircraft carrier sized keyboards and hand sized mice.  Interface designers now learn little about how to design a button, a keypad or a joystick.  I will explain the problems of using mixed media interfaces with a screen, indicators, “soft keys” and buttons.

Speaker Bio:

Tim Moore graduated with an undergraduate degree from London University and “wanted to apply the science to everyday life”.  After working for 11 years at a research/consulting group at Loughborough University department of Ergonomics he got his PhD for work he did for Ericsson, the International telephone company.
He then came to Canada to work for Nortel at the Bell-Northern Research Lab in Ottawa, where he stayed for the next 17 years, developing telephone interfaces and running three laboratories, including a usability lab. Tim left Nortel to start Ergosum Limited.  For several years he worked at CMC Electronics doing work for the military. Tim has worked on several projects for each branch of the Canadian Forces, the Navy, Army and Air Force.  His work usually involves finding out from the soldiers, sailors and airmen what are their experiences with existing systems and then asking them to collaborate with his team to devise the next generation of equipment.

2. “The Gist of NIST“, presented by Lorraine Chapman, Director of UX Research, Macadamian

NIST released the official EHR Usability Protocol, encouraging vendors to adopt specific methods and measures to reduce critical errors in the use of EHR software. Healthcare software vendors looking to distinguish their product in terms of safety and usability need only demonstrate that they are adhering to this new standard.

But what, concretely, is involved to meet the NIST EHR Usability Protocol?

Please join Macadamian’s Lorraine Chapman, Director of UX Research as she explains the bottom line on NIST EUP – skillset requirements, process requirements, and overall time and cost considerations.

Speaker Bio:

Ms. Lorraine Chapman is a highly skilled manager and researcher with over 15 years experience in the high-tech sector. In her role as Director of Research at Macadamian, Ms. Chapman has provided a broad range of clients (within the Healthcare, Unified Communications, Government, and Finance sectors) with strategic direction on business, product and customer issues. This experience includes product opportunity analysis, quantitative and qualitative research and usability analysis of websites, applications, software, and hardware. She has successfully coordinated and led interviews, field studies and usability tests with users of products in North America and Europe. Most recently, Lorraine has spent the last couple of years providing business direction and managing/conducting ethnographic research and usability testing with clinicians in the United States and Canada on behalf of a leading medical information tool provider and several EMR companies.
