2020-05-05 COVID-19 Design Jam

The World Design Organization (WDO) recently partnered with IBM and Design for America to create a global mobilization effort in response to COVID-19. Their 24-hour COVID-19 Design Challenge had teams from around the world tackle seven identified problem spaces. The second round will refine proposed recommendations.

You are invited to a two-hour design jam that will dovetail into the WDO COVID-19 Design Challenge. Hosted by our very own Hala Hawa and Raquel Alves, and facilitated by Kevin Grignon from IBM Ottawa, our two-hour event will further examine outcomes from the WDO initiative.

We will be using Zoom for this online event. If you are new to Zoom, please see the following link for information on how to join a meeting, and how to download the required app.

Due to the nature of the event, we are limiting participation to 50 and pre-registration is required, so get your ticket before they’re all gone.

We’re going to kick things off a little earlier than normal to allow for a full two hour design session guided by CapCHI’s team of volunteers. Following the design portion of the evening, each team will have approximately five minutes to present their solution to the room. Presentations will be judged by the CapCHI team, with a special prize going to the winners.

Join us at The Fox & Feather Pub and Grill for complimentary appetizers and networking opportunities at 5:30pm, with the design jam beginning at 6:00 pm. As always, our partners at The Fox & Feather will be providing our attendees with 10-percent discount on food and non-alcoholic drinks.

What:

The future of OTTAWA’S TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE is a hot button topic that played a major role in last fall’s municipal election. Well, CapCHI is going to jump on the TRAIN to see if we can help DIRECT THE FLOW of our TRANSIT future in the 2015 CapCHI Interaction Design Jam! Come on out and join CapCHI in an evening of fun, laughs, and learning.  Check out this summary of a previous rendition of our Interaction Design Jam (formerly Interactionary): http://www.capchi.org/blog/2010-08-16-interactionary-hci-design-challenge-summary.

The PLAN:  A time limited design competition where student and professional teams NAVIGATE through unique challenges, employing solid user experience methods.

The CONVOY will officially consist of teams from Akendi, Jumping Elephants, and two entries from Algonquin College‘s School of Media & Design.

Urged on by all those in attendance, the teams WEAVE their way through the TRAFFIC and follow a ROUTE to a DESTINATION. An esteemed panel of judges will give the teams points, but hopefully not DEMERIT points, in variety of categories, including teamwork, approach, final design, and audience participation. The winning team DRIVES away with great prizes and amazing bragging rights!

With spring around the corner, it’s time to hit the STREETS and get out of the office. This event is sure to be as popular as a DOUBLE DECKER BUS, so HOP ON BOARD! Whether you come by FOOT, BICYCLE, BUS, CAR, or LIGHT RAIL (not this year, but it’s coming!), we guarantee you one heck of a RIDE. While PRESTO CARDS will not be required, we do request that bring a good sense of humour, positive vibe and a sense of fun – we won’t revoke your LICENSE!

As always, there will be complimentary appetizers during the networking portion of the evening (6:00pm-6:30pm) and our partners at The Fox & Feather will be providing all those in attendance with 10% off their food and non-alcoholic drinks. We invite you to stick around after the event for more great networking, food, and drinks.

When and Where:

This event will take place on Tuesday, March 24th, 6:00 pm in the upstairs room at the The Fox & Feather Pub and Grill, located at 283 Elgin St, Ottawa, ON, Canada (foxandfeather.ca).
