Job description:
The IBM Toronto site is the largest software development facility in Canada and the third largest research Lab within the IBM Software Group worldwide. Since the site’s inception in 1967, we’ve experienced tremendous growth (from 55 people in 1967 to 2500 professionals). We have become one of the driving forces in development of IBM’s e-business on demand software. Our facility is an environmentally conscious building and has been recognized with awards from the Wildlife Habitat Council for the preservation of the conservation park like setting, as well as from Natural Resources Canada for its energy efficient design aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Ease of use is a top priority for IBM DB2 customers. The DB2 User-Centered Design team’s mandate is to build ease of use into DB2 through each stage of development by applying the user-centered design approach. We collaborate in interdisciplinary teams to design all aspects of the user experience. This involves employing a set of specialized human-computer interaction methods for acquiring user insight, converting this insight into design, and validating the effectiveness of the design through empirical evaluation of user performance.
The DB2 User-Centered Design team has an opportunity for a professional to join our team for a one-year term. This position will involve a combination of the following activities:
- Researching, defining, and validating scenarios that characterize how DB2 is used in customer environments.
- Developing and evaluating high-level conceptual designs.
- Prototyping user interface designs through both low-fidelity and high-fidelity techniques.
- Iteratively refining user interface designs based on objective user feedback and on heuristic reviews.
- User testing early implementations of product designs and gathering field data on beta releases.
- Championing the user perspective and associated issues throughout the development process.
Qualifications:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- University degree with specialization in human-computer interaction or human factors engineering
- At least a year of professional experience in user-centered design is preferred.
- Some experience (academic or work-related) with relational database management systems in one or more of the following roles is preferred:
- Development of applications that use relational databases
- Administration of relational databases
- Physical design of database schemas
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree
- English: Fluent
Preferred
- Master’s Degree in Information Technology
